This new VST/AU package is being billed as a “groove instrument.” It’s something like a REX player combined with Effectrix, a drum machine, and a sequencer that allows lots of randomization. To get a better idea of what the software does, we spoke with Detroit producer and sound designer Mike Huckaby, who helped design some of the presets that come with Egoist.

Dubspot:Is Egoist an instrument, or an effect? Or both?

Mike Huckaby: Egoist is an instrument that is equipped with some effects. The effects can be applied to samples in very creative ways. But yes, Egoist is an instrument designed for sample manipulation, where slices of a sample can be rearranged and have effects applied to them.

I was really blown away by the stunning design, ease of manipulating samples, and the ability to freely apply slices within a sample. You can just throw any sample into this instrument and get some really useful results quickly.

Do you use egoist on beats? Melodies?

I use it for everything. There is no telling what I might come up with while using this instrument. More importantly, since Egoist is equipped with a drum machine, you can always be assured that you will be rhythmically in time with a melodic sequence.

Why do you recommend this software for other music producers?

I can’t think of another software instrument that allows you to freely manipulate a sample in this manner. The GUI (Graphic User Interface) just stimulates creativity. You gotta give it up to the guys designed this instrument. Especially in the effects section. A long day with this can equip the user with unlimited amounts of creativity. As I’ve said before, you may think you have another software instrument that does something like this, but in fact, you don’t!
